How can a business coach help me with sales?
If you’re an entrepreneur, you’re probably always looking for ways to improve your sales game. But, it’s not always easy to know where to turn for help. Here at Action Coach, we help our members get their sales process producing profitable results. So we thought we’d write an article on how a business coach can help you with sales. And if a coach isn’t for you, this article will show you what else you can do.
What are you currently doing to get conversions?
The first thing to get clear is the difference between marketing and sales. Marketing is about generating leads, improving traffic, and getting more people to see or get in touch with your business in the first place. Sales is about converting those people that have shown interest. They might have filled in an enquiry form or booked a meeting. If you are an e-commerce business, sales take over when they click on your product.
So if it’s really more enquiries, more leads and more traffic that you need help with, you might be better off checking out our article about marketing by clicking here.
Once you are clear that it’s sales you need help with, a coach will start out by taking a look at what you are currently doing to convert leads. A good business coach wants to see the good, the bad and the ugly.
When they see the good, they can encourage you to do more of it and help you get even better still.
With the bad and the ugly, you can start to learn new techniques and revise the process to get better conversion.
You need an understanding of what’s working and what’s not from the off so you can improve. That’s the first thing a good coach would do when working with you on your sales process.
A business coach will look at and analyse what part of your sales process is getting you results.
A good business coach will uncover what’s really working. They will delve into every aspect of your sales process and analyse it with a fine-toothed comb.
From the way you approach leads, to the language you use in negotiations, a great business coach will leave no stone unturned.
With their expert eye, they will identify what parts of your sales process are working for you and what areas need a little TLC. By doing so, they’ll help you focus your efforts and resources in the right places. That way you can get the best results from your sales efforts.
We really want to lean into the things you’re doing well and maximise their effectiveness. It’s a bit like having a football team, if you have the best goal scorer in the league, you wouldn’t put him in the nets to learn how to be a better goalkeeper. You want him to score goals. So we start the same way by really leaning into what you are good at and becoming even better at it.
Which part of your sales process isn’t working?
A high-level business coach can be like a sales sleuth, the master of identifying what’s holding you back from reaching your full potential. They’ll analyse your whole sales approach. That includes your language, your tactics, your scripts, your copywriting and more to uncover where the weak links are.
Once we’re clear on the weak spots, it’s time to get down to action.
Think of a great business coach as a sales superhero, armed with the power to transform your process and boost your results. With their guidance, you’ll be able to focus your efforts on what truly drives sales, leaving no room for inefficiencies.
Figuring out what’s holding you back is critical to helping you accelerate forward.
What could work that you’re not currently doing?
It’s always worth taking a look at things that you’ve never tried before. There might be things that could work but you might not have tried them because you didn’t have the knowledge.
It could be because you didn’t have belief in yourself and your sales team that you could make a certain strategy work. Or it could be because they work in other industries and “no one does it like that in your industry.”
A great coach will help you think outside the box and look at things that you’ve never tried before.
How a coach helps your conversion more predictable
A business coach can help make your sales conversion more predictable with… you guessed it, data. With great data you can analyse and optimise various aspects of your sales process. It can help you identify areas where you may be losing potential customers, and provide guidance on how to improve your sales pitch. It might even be your communication, or negotiation skills.
Additionally, they can assist you in defining your target audience and understanding their buying habits, so you can tailor your sales approach to better meet their needs.
Furthermore, a coach can help you create a system for tracking and analysing your sales performance, allowing you to make data-driven decisions and adjust your strategy as needed. By bringing structure and predictability to your sales process, a good coach can help you consistently convert more prospects into customers.
Time to write a sales process
A strong business coach could assist you in writing a sales process by:
- Understanding your target audience and their buying behaviour
- Defining your ideal customer profile so you can speak to them in their language
- Mapping out the sales process and its stages
- Creating a script for each stage of the sales process
- Determining the best methods for follow-up and closing deals
- Providing guidance on how to track and measure success
- Offering strategies for continuous improvement of the sales process.
The coach can help you create a clear and effective sales process that can increase your chances of closing deals and achieving your business goals.
Will a business coach hold you accountable for taking action on the plan?
Once you’ve got your sales process, the next step for the coach is to hold you accountable. There’s no point in writing a great process and then putting it on the shelf and forgetting about it. You have to use it, track the data, and then review the data to see if it worked.
One of the main skills of a coach is the ability to hold people to account. Being a business owner means you have no boss. A coach is there to make sure you follow through on what you said you were going to do. That includes executing your sales process and reviewing the data.
So yes, a good business coach will hold you accountable.
When is a business coach helping me with sales a bad idea?
There are a few situations when a business coach might not be the best resource for help with your sales efforts.
- Resistance to change. If you are resistant to new ideas and strategies, a business coach may not be able to help you improve your sales process. There’s no point learning lots of new strategies, getting the education and then doing nothing with it. You’d just be wasting your own money.
- Budget constraints. Hiring a business coach is going to cost you something. If your budget is limited, it may not be the best investment for your business. There are free coaching programmes out there and here at Action Coach we have a programme for as little as £12.50 a month. Those programmes might not be centred around sales in particular though.
- Misalignment of values. If you have different values and priorities than the coach, it may be difficult for them to effectively help you improve your sales process. So be sure to do some research and take some time to get to know them before you buy.
It’s important to assess your business’s needs and resources before deciding if a business coach is the right fit for your sales process.
Additionally, if you already have a well-established sales process with a proven track record, a coach might not be necessary. But if you have other areas you need help with they may be able to help you with those things such as goal setting, managing time, or even finance.
Overall, if you’re looking to improve your sales department, increase your reach, and grow your business, a business coach can be a valuable asset. So, it really comes down to your unique needs and goals.
What should I do if I don’t want a coach?
If having a business coach isn’t for you but you want to improve your sales results there’s a bunch of things you can do.
- Great sales books. There are plenty of great sales books out there like The Perfect Close by James Muir. Take the time to sit down, take notes and get yourself through some great sales books.
- Attend seminars and conferences. There are plenty of great sales seminars, just get out there and find them. You can even attend business conferences like BizX to learn from some of the best in the world.
- Online training. You can join online training courses such as those by Grant Cardone. That way you can learn at your own pace.
No matter which method you prefer, there is a way to improve your sales and increase your profit.
Summary
To keep it basic, a good coach will help you learn a thing or two about sales so you actually know what you’re doing. They’ll help you create a sales process before standing by your side and making sure you execute then test and measure it.
